Community‑Led Research for Inclusive Health Innovation – Skin TONE (MISDOSS)

Nurturing Foundations proudly partnered with the University of Manchester, the British Skin Foundation, and the HS Northern Care Alliance on the Skin TONE (MISDOSS) study — a pioneering project exploring how light interacts with brown and black skin to improve oxygen measurement accuracy.

Sixty local residents participated through our centres in Harpurhey and North Manchester, helping researchers understand the limitations of current medical devices and identify promising alternatives such as infrared light and palm‑based readings. This collaboration reflects our commitment to ensuring that scientific innovation serves everyone equitably, addressing racial bias in healthcare technology through community insight and lived experience.

Nurturing Foundations is proud to have partnered with Vocal and the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) Manchester to create meaningful opportunities for local people to influence and participate in health research. By bringing researchers directly into trusted community settings in Harpurhey, the partnership has strengthened relationships between residents and the research community, increased engagement in cardiovascular and skin health studies, and helped ensure that research is more inclusive, accessible and representative of diverse communities. Through community-led conversations and collaborative events, local people have been able to share their experiences, shape research approaches and contribute to studies that aim to improve health outcomes for everyone.

Empowering communities through co-production and creativity – Nurture Hub

As a Black‑led social mobility charity based in Harpurhey, Nurturing Foundations drives systemic change by delivering culturally informed, community‑led solutions. Our work spans health, education, employment, and personal development, removing structural barriers that limit potential.

Through initiatives like the Nurture Hub and creative workshops such as Zine‑making with Nurturing Foundations, we co‑produce programmes with residents and researchers to build trust, amplify local voices, and design trauma‑responsive models of support. Each project strengthens wellbeing, skills, and belonging — nurturing the foundations for thriving, resilient communities.

Understanding and redefining race terminology: towards inclusive language and racial equity in higher education

In collaboration with the University of Manchester’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion division on this groundbreaking research initiative. The study explores how race‑related language influences inclusion and equity across academic and professional spaces. Drawing insights from 189 participants through surveys and focus groups, it reveals the importance of self‑defined racial identifiers, the emotional impact of microaggressions, and the need for greater institutional trust and accountability.

The findings highlight how minoritized students often bear the burden of advancing inclusion efforts and call for systemic change through the adoption of inclusive, community‑informed language. This partnership reflects Nurturing Foundations’ ongoing commitment to shaping equitable environments where every voice is respected and represented.
